This morning my mother and I saw an interesting episode on ‘Context with Lorna Dueck: Life Beyond the Headlines’. ‘Context’ is a Christian-based, independent television series that relies on donations from its viewers to keep the show going. ‘Context’ covers news that is never covered by the mainstream media and it delves deep into issues that matter to people. Even though it is Christian based, it is not the preachy-type of Christian show that many people may think it to be.
The part of the episode my mother and I saw this morning was on Radical Youth: Revealing the reasons why young people are getting caught up in terrorist groups and activities. The King’s University, a Christian university in Ontario has accepted Omar Khadr into their student body. Omar Khadr, a former Muslim terrorist has the chance to assimilate into Canadian society while studying at a university.
At first I thought the president of The King’s University was completely out of her mind to admit a former terrorist into her university. Don’t people, particularly educators, realize that Omar could potentially strike again? On the other hand, is it fair to give even a former terrorist a second chance to change for the better; to live a productive and healthy life? It sure takes a lot of trust, a lot of courage and a lot of confidence to give a person like Omar a second chance. But, is love — I don’t mean puppy love; I mean pure love — truly the secret recipe to end terrorism?
